ARCHITECTURE AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
The “Wurmizil” is a ceramic indoor composter which enables urban citizen to composte their own organic waste and use the generated fertile soil to feritilze and plant herbs and vegetables in a private and public space.
18% of the bio-waste is still found unseparated in the residual waste. It is therefore lost as an important resource. Per year this is an amount of 60-160t of unused organic waste in Austria. Biological waste plays a significant role in the production of fertile soil. This humus is essential for our food and the maintenance of our living environment.
The Wurmizil is a level composter composed of three levels. Therefore, the single stages of composting are easily separated. It takes about 3-4 months to fill the upper level. Through the rotation of the levels it is made possible to retrieve the finished soil and stack the now empty level on top.
The composting works with 3000-4000 worms. Through holes on the bottom of the container the worms can crawl from one level to the next one. The air circulation plays a particular important part in the composting process. For this purpose, special holes are arranged on the sides. At the same moment ceramic as a material is permeable and can store water for a later moment.
The aim of the Wurmizil is to allow more people to engage actively with the process of soil creation and to functionally integrate it in their own households by composting organic waste of one’s own.
